MAN YOUR BATTLE STATIONS

By Bob Coppens

This was no drill....

I was on the CGC MESQUITE in 1959. We were breaking ice in Northern Lake Michigan. I'm laying in my bunk grabbing some rest when I hear over the P.A., "MAN YOUR BATTLE STATIONS ... MAN YOUR BATTLE STATIONS." "Man Your Battle Stations," I thought --- "What the Hell? I'm on Lake Michigan in 1959 .... Man Your Battle Stations?"

About that time the bow of a tanker came right through the bulkhead where I'm layin'. The skipper got so excited when he saw we were gonna get rammed and all he could think of was "Man Your Battle Stations."
