CAPT Daniel May is the new CO of USCG Group Boston, replacing CAPT Charles Beck,
who retired.
CG Station Brant Point and CGC Sanibel both received Meritorious Team
Commendations for a foggy MEDIVAC on 10 JUL 01.
BM1 Pete Dautel was recognized for his life saving efforts at Cisco Beach,
Nantucket, on 21 JUL 88. Yes, that was 1988! The then BM3 Dautel was off duty
from Station Brant Point and at the beach; a rip tide started carrying several
people out and they were in immediate danger of drowning. BM3 Dautel
grabbed/borrowed a boogie board and got them all safely back to the beach. He
received his award on 16 JUL 01 at Group Woods Hole, 13 years later. But he got
it.
Chatham's new 27' boat is not a MLB but it is a SAFE boat; secure all-around
flotation equipped boat.
Recent hat arrivals include US COAST GUARD AUXILIARY, NANTUCKET (Tim Phillips);
SHIP ANALYTICS, WSIM 1-2, USCG (BMCM Jack Downey); HURON, WLV 103, (Jerry
Radloff); US COAST GUARD, STA VENICE (BMCS Bruce Bradley); and US COAST GUARD,
GROUP BOSTON, W/EGGS (CAPT Daniel May). The Hat Rack is now home to 705 CG hats.
An outstanding Group Woods Hole Change of Command Ceremony was held at Nobska
Light on 27 JUL 01. CAPT Russell Webster is now in Boston and the new Group
Commander is CAPT James Murray. Senior Chief Knight put together a perfect
ceremony on a weather perfect day. Mass. State Police Sgt. Dan Clark belted out
the National Anthem with gusto - that guy is good! "Seen on the Scene"
included CAPT Nolan, CAPT Beck, CAPT Pettit, CWO Bernie Webber (0f CG 36500
fame), BMCM Jack Downey, BMCM Manny Fillman BMCS Gordie McClay, BMCS Sheila
Lucy, and all of the CO's and OIC's working for Group Woods Hole. Yes, I know
that BMCS Lucy is one of the OIC's, but I had to spell out BMCS which she made
on 01 AUG 01!
LORSTA Nantucket celebrated Coast Guard Day on 04 AUG 01 with a cook out,
picnic, volley ball game etc. The Station and grounds really look great and all
hands had a good time.
Nantucket House, the morale house at LORSTA Nantucket is once again open for
guests. Call or visit MWR ar Air Station Cape Cod for information and
reservations.
CWO4 Doug Cooper (ret), former CO of Cutters White Sage and Ida Lewis, is now
running an oil rig boat in the Gulf of Mexico.
The 33rd Annual Nantucket Billfish Tournament was a success with 1 swordfish
(released), 5 blue marlin (released), 5 white marlin (released), 6 wahoo (dinner
table), and dozens of yellowfin, bluefin and albacore tuna mostly released. The
Proud Mary IV Award was presented to "little neck master" Dan Cassano.
Fair winds and following seas,
