REPUBLIC OF NANTUCKET COAST GUARD NEWS
April 2004
Ice was the buzz word this past winter as record low temperatures froze
Nantucket Harbor and beyond for several weeks. IDA LEWIS, MORRO BAY and STURGEON
BAY did an outstanding job keeping the channel open for the ferries and fuel
barges.
The former MORRO BAY, now RONC ICE HOUND, came out a winner with hat #750 from
LT Reino Ecklord, Commanding Officer. The Ring Game score is classified. Their
EO, CWO Doug Talbot, was stationed at STA Brant Point 20 years ago. He and CWO
Paul Boucher (Ret), who was his OIC at that time had a nice gam one evening. LT
Ecklord shared his Nantucket Bay Scallops with his crew.
CWO Paul Lyver (Ret), former CO of IDA LEWIS, is working on the GREY LADY. He
has completed most of his 200 ton Masters license, thanks to BMCM Manny Fillman
(Ret).
The winner of the 2003 Woody's Tournament is CWO Tim Mooney (Ret) with 4,719.2
points. Tim is working on the line crew at Nantucket Memorial Airport.
While breaking bread with Kathy and Cabin Boy on 01 JAN 04, BMCS Sheila Lucey,
OIC, STA Brant Point, saw a deer "real close" from their sunroom.
The January issue of "Lighthouse Digest" had a color picture of Brant Point
Lighthouse with the famous Christmas Wreath; SN Adam Dani sent them the picture.
On 01 JAN 04 the former MK1 Carl Brietzke became MKC Carl Brietzke. Chief
Brietzke is on JUNIPER.
The 02 FEB issue of "Time Magazine" featured MCPOCG Vince Patton (Ret) on page
67.
In addition to STA Brant Point, STA Brunswick (GA) also received the Sumner
Kimball Readiness Award. OIC John Sesta reported that his crew had their Bounce
sheets on but the MLB STAN team didn't, so it was a quick inspection (read:
gnats!).
A house fire near STA Brant Point was spotted by the crew who sounded the alarm.
There wasn't much left of the burning house but several nearby houses were
spared thanks to their timely response.
The NG Army MP's who were stationed at Nantucket Memorial Airport after 9/11 are
all safely back home after a 2 year deployment in Afganistan.
Landon Riley Cronin arrived on 04 FEB, weighing 8 lbs. 5 oz. He is #3 for BM1
Kory and Ginny Cronin, and is worth 3,990 points in the Woody's Tournament.
BMCS Ron Signs (Ret), former OIC at ANT Woods Hole, is a member of the crew of
MV NANTUCKET, etc.
The crew from STA Brant Point tripped the light fantastic with the patients at
OUR ISLAND HOME on 12 FEB. The folks loved every minute (minuet?) of the event.
Training Center Yorktown is now RON HOMEWORK.
BMC Mark Mello, XPO STA Fort Pierce, will assume command as OIC, STA Cape Cod
Canal on 23 APR 04.
BMCM Jack Downey's daughter Rebecca will marry Corky on 19 JUN 04, on Nantucket.
MKC Bryan Bayrd (Ret) has decided to go to college. Work in the civilian sector
was "too hard."
Nantucket Firefighter/EMT Liz Shannon recently received The Firefighter Award
for her outstanding work. She was one of three from the Cape & Islands to be so
honored. Liz, among other things, was the lead EMT when the NG Army MP's took
the EMT course while they were stationed here at the airport.
CWO Dave Fronzuto (Ret) recently received the Governor's Hospitality Award in
Hyannis. Following his 1990 retirement, Dave has been the Marine Superintendent
and Harbormaster for Nantucket. He was also CO of LORSTA Nantucket when there
was a much larger crew there.
LCDR Rick Pineiro plans to visit Nantucket 16-18 APR 04. Rick was the XPO at STA
Brant Point in the mid 80's when he was picked to go to South America and join
a DIAT. He has also been at GITMO and was the CO of USCGC NANTUCKET. When he was
commissioned, he was the oldest Ensign in the Coast Guard.
