The Mighty "O"

By Victor D. Phillips

Another Tale of the CGC Owasco

Being in The Coast Guard was my Life's ambition. I had loved the water all my life, being raised up by Dale Hollow Tenn., and being a Pisces, I was just drawn to The Coast Guard !

I could tell you a lot of stories, but the one that stands out is the night on Ocean Station, off St. Johns Newfoundland, We encountered a "Perfect Storm"  - -just over night........

All night long we were pounded with waves, that were twice as high as the bridge, 60ft, - - - 75ft, - - - -who knew how high - - - - all we knew was  - - - - -we were under water more than we were above...........

We would be slammed under water by one wave, soon as we would bob back up.............we would get slammed back under .... by another.....

Needless to say......... nobody got any sleep that night......I came up out of the mess deck going forward, at this end of this hallway, it was bending one way..... at the other end....it was bending the other.....

Like a "Fun House"....... Only this wasn't fun...........The next morning, when the weather cleared,
Our guide on's and stanchions.......were bent over to the deck.......

Our 5in mount ......the front of it......was caved in ........Like a satellite dish.

We had been doing 18 knots......"Full Speed Ahead"..........and we had been going, a half a knot backwards..... all night.

Only the men aboard "The Big O", that night........Know what we lived through,,,,And lived to tell the tale...........
